3 Popular Culture Icons - Week 2

The three popular culture icons that I chose are; Duck Dynasty, Super Heroes, and the Hashtag symbol.
1) Duck Dynasty is a booming television series of a family that believes in faith, family, and hunting. I chose this icon because I see their memorabilia everywhere! Beards are everywhere!  They stand for things that most Christians, such as myself would. I believe they have helped curve our culture toward family related entertainment. I've noticed that there have been more Christ based and family movies and series hit the media and entertainment world. This is important to me, because of course, being a Christian - you are proud of any positive influence in the world.

2) I chose super heroes in general, because there have been so many remake of movies here lately! And so much memorabilia. You see their symbols everywhere and just instantly know what they mean! I have a daughter who is obsessed with super heroes. You would think she is a boy. But, as she has entered Kindergarten, I have realized that this is a huge fad. All kids love the variety of superheros. There are all kinds of toys and matching apparel worn by girls and boys. You will see home decor and plaques of super hero symbols, even for adults. This is important to me, because it is a huge part of my daughter's imagination.

3) The Hashtag symbol....need I say more!? I see so many posts on social media with hashtags for everything. It's a great way to organize thoughts, organizations, and things in common. I see this symbol printed on t-shirts, on billboards, adds that say hastag this or hashtag that. I not only use this personally, but the company that I work for, has created a shirt that says #GodIsGreater. So, the effects not just posting something, but organizing it into a hashtag, brings the post into a whole other world of relevant items.

What is Poular Culture - Week 1

What is Popular Culture and what does it mean to me?

Popular Culture is any idea, perspective, attitude, images, products, etc., directed toward the general masses of people. This can be items such as social media, bands, art images, movies, concerts, clothing, etc.
Pop Culture basically means to me; keeping up with the times. Personally, Pop Culture means relating to the rest of the world, in my eyes. Everything has a life cycle, fads come and go, and things progress or slow down. I would be perfectly happy living in the woods, hunting, fishing, and gardening, without a care of what changes in the world. But, there are bills to pay, children to raise, and progress to make in the business world. Keeping up with Pop Culture educates me of what the world does and how it changes. It keeps me diverse, where I have a better understanding of business and culture. Pop Culture effects what consumers buy, do, and follow. So, to keep things running, we have to continuously follow Pop Culture, grow, and evolve. The mind always has to be open and ready for change!

Why is an understanding of Popular Culture relevant to me in a business culture and in my present and future career?

Being an Administrative Assistant for a Christian T-Shirt factory, trends and following of clothing trends are essential to assist in administrative areas. We also focus on keeping up with technology trends and search out programs to make work easier for many departments.
In working for an accounting degree, I could utilize this in many different areas. Whether it be keeping up with tax laws, tax programs, business consulting and trends, etc. Also, when, where, and how money is spent and categorizing it. All of this is affected by Popular Culture.
Or, even continuing in an administrative world or a human resources world with an accounting degree, it is important to study Pop Culture, so you can relate it to employees, prospecting, or even training.

What would you consider to be an example of a pop artifact? And why would you choose it?

One artifact of Pop Culture is the Pinterest. I am a huge Pinterest fan. I would choose, and actually currently use Pinterest, because you can organize your own 'Pop Culture' area. Pinterest customizes more Pins to show on your walls, according to what you search for and pin. So, the trends you want to follow, you can get customized search results to follow the trends that are important to you. Pinterest also gives you the ability to pin items as well and get your ideas out there.
