After
studying this week’s readings, I can relate Pinterest to Stereotypes. In
Profiles of Popular Culture, it states that, “Stereotypes are the generalities
of life that are cut down into a find precise point concerning a particular
subject and usually directed toward a special goal.” Pinterest allows people to
log in and immediately go to their favorite category to browse. There are
categories such as art, education, humor, gardening, home décor, etc.
Stereotypes are generally negative and unsubstantial in the end. Even though
the categories of Pinterest are very narrowed down, it also allows the positive
aspect of being able to use any of those categories. A gardener does not have
to only look in the gardening section, they can break the barrier and browse
home décor or education as well. Pinterest is a huge pool of information and
different people that can all merge and learn from each other.
I have also read that, “Rituals are stereotypes in
action.” (Brownie, 2005) Pinterest is a common place for people to find ideas
to improve their rituals or make new additions to their rituals. The holiday,
home décor, and craft categories are where many people go to find ideas to make
gifts, food, decorations, favors, etc. to improve their rituals such as holidays.
There are many other rituals that could be considered in other categories as
well. Pinterest has created a world where the named stereotypes and rituals
never really have to stay the same. Creativity and new ideas explode on this
site!
I am always on Pinterest looking for garden ideas, home
décor ideas, kid’s crafts, and outdoor activities. You would think that I was a
stay at home wife and mother, right? Well, then, I also look up healthy recipes
and new workout routines. Maybe I’m a fitness junkie? I also read up on
business practices and organizational skills. Now, this is getting really
interesting. Just what type of person am I? I work full time, have children,
love the outdoors, lift weights, etc. I have a very versatile lifestyle and
Pinterest allows me to improve in many different areas of my life. I don’t have
to focus or label myself as one stereotype and there is a wealth of information
to improve my rituals.
